The Marko Polo Festival was founded in 1996 on the island of Korčula, marking the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's return to his home town. Every autumn since, it has brought performers and audiences together for two evenings dedicated to song and wine.

The festival takes its name from Korčula's own tradition around Marco Polo — the famous traveller, merchant and diplomat whose travel accounts opened Europe's door to the civilisations of Asia.

Klapa song has been part of the programme since the first edition — the Dalmatian a cappella tradition performed each year on the Korčula stage by both new and established klapa groups.

The festival is organised by ŠEGEDIN d.o.o. of Korčula, with Petar Šegedin as director.
